My study of Fort Pickens Casements began on February 2. I intend to publish this later as a slide show, but right now will just post a single photo until I figure out some new software for slide shows.

The last day I was in New Mexico, I photographed the Rio Grande outside of Mesilla, NM. The River here is not part of the border between the United States and Mexico.

Fort Pickens is one of those massive masonry fortresses built for coastal defense prior to our Civil War. Most of the fortress and its 21,500,000 bricks have survived a war, a massive accidental explosion and numerous hurricanes. My visit extended over three days when the weather was less than ideal, punctuated by periods of rain and heavy fog. Because of these conditions, I spent most of my time photographing the gun casements and bastions. They were in most cases dark, damp and cold, but fascinating. The brickwork with the interlocking massive arches is fantastic!

Fort Pickens Casements No. 1
This is a series of infrared photos taken at a friends home. It is not what many people picture as southern New Mexico. I have been working again on adding pages and slide shows using Adobe Muse software in conjunction with WordPress and Dreamweaver. So, I should be adding a link here in the near future for a slide show.
New Mexico Creek Study
Windmills are certainly not new, but traveling the southwest reminded me that the old versions for pumping water are still alive, well and in use.

I am considering starting a study on deserted, highway, service buildings. I took a series of these while in New Mexico. These would include old truck stops, gas stations and restaurants.

We are staying in a very nicely restored adobe house in an old neighborhood. The house next door is awaiting hopefully a similar restoration. It appears to not have been occupied for some time.

This is one of the most amazing areas I have ever seen. At times you don’t know if you are in the midst of the most pristine sand dunes you have ever seen with the ocean just over the next rise, or looking at a winter wonderland of fresh snow. Reality is that you are in the desert.

This is the first post I have done since I ended my 365 entries. January finds me in New Mexico exploring the countryside. I have been here two days and have already found two weeks worth of potential subjects. A hike in Dripping Springs Natural Area provided this scene out of the Old Southwest.
